Pathways of Passion: Liana Cincotti’s Journey from Marketing to Writing

Liana Cincotti received her undergraduate degree in marketing and accounting, graduating a semester early in December 2022. As a member of Merrimack’s honors program, she concluded her final semester by studying abroad in the United Kingdom, specifically in the countryside of Ruxton, located approximately two hours north of London, an experience she anticipates revisiting.

Liana started gaining career experience her sophomore year with her first internship at the O’Brien Center for Career Development as their Digital Marketing and Social Media intern. Despite being relatively new to platforms like TikTok, she successfully established and cultivated the O’Brien Center’s TikTok account, gaining over 15,000 followers. Building on her marketing resume, Liana secured a summer internship in 2022 as the Marketing and Communications intern for the Commonwealth Corporation where she contributed to various tasks such as managing social media accounts, event planning, writing speeches, assisting with design creation of flyers and more. She came across this internship on Handshake, a resource provided by the O’Brien Center for job and internship searches, and she swears by using this website to find more experiences.

Her interest in the field of marketing, complemented her love for writing that she supported in by taking a creative writing course during her junior year. Inspired by a chapter she wrote for a class project, it led to her writing a full-fledged book titled “Don’t Be In Love,” which she self-published and gained a lot of readers. Taking inspiration from music from artists like Taylor Swift and romcoms films set in New York, is usually how Liana stories come to life.

Shortly after, she began writing a second book titled “Picking Daisies on Sundays.” Liana took everything she learned about marketing and was able to fully market the book online for free herself, which led to surpassing initial expectations of readers. Since then, being an author has become an option for a career path; publishers have reached out to Liana, and she is currently in the process of finding an agent as she writes her third book.

While immersing herself in the world of writing, Liana concurrently serves as a Marketing Assistant for two agencies, where she focuses on promoting tourism districts and designing websites for small businesses. Reflecting on her journey, she encourages students to utilize the resources offered on campus to navigate the job application process with confidence.  She also emphasizes the importance of pursuing one’s passions, as they may unexpectedly pave the way to unforeseen opportunities and career paths.
