Chris Rincon’s Path to Success in Mechanical Engineering

Chris Rincon, majoring in mechanical engineering with minors in mathematics and operation management, holds significant roles in various campus organizations. He serves as the president of Merrimack College’s National Society of Black Engineers chapter (NSBE), vice president of Let’s Innovate, treasurer for the robotics club and a first-year experience mentor. Alongside his active involvement in college activities, Chris has gained valuable experience through internships, currently holding an Electro-Mechanical Co-op position at Draper.

During the summer of 2023, Chris undertook an internship at GE Aerospace as a manufacturing engineer. His responsibilities included identifying ways to minimize waste and streamline the production process. Chris successfully networked with GE facility employees during his previous job at an instant oil change, leading to a referral for the internship. With guidance from his career advisor, Laura Thibodeau, Chris solidified his resume and cover letter writing skills. Attending the Professional Development Retreat further equipped him with the ability to communicate effectively with employers and think on the spot.

Reflecting on his experience at GE Aerospace, Chris described it as enjoyable and educational. His networking efforts paid off, as he received a full-time job offer after graduation in 2025. At the NSBE fall regional conference, Chris connected with Franklyn Webb from Draper, who recommended him for a co-op position during the 2024 spring semester. Chris appreciates the supportive environment at Draper, where asking questions and seeking help are encouraged from day one. He has been able to apply skills gained at GE, such as reading and creating blueprints, in his current co-op role.

Advice Chris would give to other engineers would be to get a manufacturing internship position first, although it is not as technical as a regular engineering position, he says it will help you understand how parts are made and what process they go through. He also encourages students to approach professors for insights, actively participate in campus clubs and attend conferences for networking opportunities. These experiences contribute to a well-rounded and successful academic and professional journey.
