The Orange County Riptide, a collegiate wood bat summer baseball team playing games at the Great Park in Irvine, California, seeks interns for our Audio Entertainment Production Internship / Stadium DJ position.

Stadium DJ will have a passion for music and a deep understanding of various genres. Stadium Disc Jockey will be responsible for creating and maintaining a lively and engaging atmosphere at OC Riptide games. Curating playlists for home and visitor batting practice, ambient music for when fans enter the stadium, music between innings and between pitches along with walk-up music for Riptide players are just a few of the tasks and duties expected.

Please Note: This un-paid internship position will require your attendance at home games in Irvine, Calif. This is not a position that can be performed remotely.

If you are attending college outside of the Orange County, Calif. area, you must make your own living arrangements for the summer. The OC Riptide cannot provide housing for out-of-the-area interns.

In lieu of compensation, academic credit is available for this internship. Academic credit is not guaranteed and is dependent upon your school’s requirements and terms. Check with your school’s Internship Coordinator BEFORE accepting the hiring offer to determine if this position satisfies the criteria for receiving academic credit.

Learning Objectives:

  • Stadium DeeJay interns will learn to keep baseball fans entertained and engaged during a sporting event.
  • Stadium DJ interns will learn appropriate times to play certain types of music depending on the game flow and state of the game.
  • Stadium Disc Jockey interns will learn to ensure that there is no “dead air” during the course of a game and to work closely with the live game producer when to play music and sound effects.
  • By the end of the summer, the Stadium DJ should have gained exceptional knowledge in keeping fans entertained at a sporting event and providing an engaging and exciting atmosphere and experience. Should interns pursue career advancement in sports, additional networking within the Southern California sports entertainment industry is available.

Because this position requires attendance at home games, (25+ games spanning from June through early August) applicants are expected to work four (4) to five (5) hours per game. This includes pre-game, in-game and post-game fan engagement.

Duties for the Stadium Disc Jockey will consist of, but not be limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the Director of Game Presentation & Production
  • Provide wide range of playlists and music mixes depending on the setting and choose music to suit your audience’s taste and the venue’s music policy.
  • Feed off the crowd and get the crowd involved with the activities and events of the venue for entertainment value.
  • Have knowledge of music trends.
  • Ensure a smooth transition between songs and maintain a consistent flow of music
  • Adhere to all relevant laws and regulations regarding music licensing and copyright
  • Collaborate with performers, managers, contractors, and stadium staff to ensure appropriate sound equipment needs and satisfactory audio levels are met and maintained.
  • Lead the sound check with wireless microphone emcee, anthem performers, PA announcer, etc.

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere, as well as independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to endure long periods of standing and sitting
  • Time management skills, capable of meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure in live event environments.
  • Quick decision making and clear communication skills.
  • Ability to recognize challenges proactively and confidently troubleshoot.
  • Understanding of signal flow and adaptability to sound control in various environments.
  • Proficient in using advanced DJ equipment, including digital mixers, controllers, and professional sound systems.
  • Expertise in crowd engagement techniques, with a talent for reading audience reactions and adapting performances accordingly.
  • Strong team player with the ability to coordinate with live game producer and on the field personnel.

The Orange County Riptide Baseball Club is a 501(c)(3) and all of our internships comply with the US Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act. The OC Riptide ensures that all unpaid interns and students understand the following:

  1. The extent to which the intern and the employer clearly understand that there is no expectation of compensation. Any promise of compensation, express or implied, suggests that the intern is an employee—and vice versa.
  2. The extent to which the internship provides training that would be similar to that which would be given in an educational environment, including the clinical and other hands-on training provided by educational institutions.
  3. The extent to which the internship is tied to the intern’s formal education program by integrated coursework or the receipt of academic credit.
  4. The extent to which the internship accommodates the intern’s academic commitments by corresponding to the academic calendar.
  5. The extent to which the internship’s duration is limited to the period in which the internship provides the intern with beneficial learning.
  6. The extent to which the intern’s work complements, rather than displaces, the work of paid employees while providing significant educational benefits to the intern.
  7. The extent to which the intern and the employer understand that the internship is conducted without entitlement to a paid job at the conclusion of the internship.
