Description
A Graduate Data Science Peer Tutor provides drop-in tutoring to all students of the Merrimack College community enrolled in graduate data science coursework. Emphasis is placed on helping students understand not only what to do, but why to do it. The goal is to strengthen programming and statistics skills, and not merely help with homework. A Peer Tutor is an adept graduate student of data science, an excellent communicator of programming or statistics, and a compassionate, dedicated member of the Merrimack College community.
Responsibilities
- Tutor Merrimack College students remotely via Zoom and/or Canvas in their graduate data science and computer science course skills and content in such a way as to maintain the College Academic Integrity Code;
- Attend up to approximately ten hours of in-person tutor training per semester in the fall and spring, as instructed by the Program Director;
- Assist the Program Director, or other professional staff with clerical tasks related to data collection, publicity, preparation of time sheets, etc.;
- Maintain a work environment conducive to learning and confidence building;
- As requested, provide input to the Program Director relative to the performance of Peer and Professional Tutors with whom he/she/they works;
- Assist with tasks necessary to the day-to-day operation of the Tutoring services of E&CS;
- As requested, present content, develop tutoring materials, mentor new tutors, engage in extra activities that build the School’s tutoring services.
- Establish (with professional staff) standard tutoring availability hours including open online office hours (with some weekend availability).
- Total tutoring work assignment will average no more than 12 hours per week (may vary week to week).
Employment Prerequisites and Training Requirements
- At the time of hire, the Peer Tutor must have completed or be currently enrolled in upper-level data science undergraduate coursework OR have completed introductory data science graduate coursework.
- If you have already completed your data science course(s), you must have earned a B+ or higher.
- If you are currently enrolled in your data science course(s), the School must receive confirmation from your instructor for that course that you are on track to earn a B+ or higher.
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
- All applicants must arrange for a recommendation from faculty or staff who have observed your data science or computer science abilities and capacity to communicate programming/statistics concepts.
