Position Overview:

The Lawrence Police Department is seeking a motivated and creative student intern to assist the Public Relations Officer in enhancing the department’s outreach and communication efforts. This internship provides hands-on experience in law enforcement communications, with a focus on social media, public relations, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

· Assist in creating, scheduling, and managing content for the department’s official social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram).

· Help monitor social media activity, respond to comments/questions when appropriate, and identify engagement trends.

· Draft press releases, community updates, and informational bulletins.

· Support the planning and promotion of public events, community outreach programs, and press conferences.

· Assist in developing visual content, including graphics, photos, and videos.

· Maintain and update public information materials, both digital and print.

· Perform basic administrative duties related to public relations efforts.

Learning Objectives:

· Gain practical experience in public sector communications and social media management.

· Learn how law enforcement agencies engage with the community through public relations.

· Understand best practices for crisis communication and media relations in a government setting.

· Develop content creation and writing skills tailored to a professional audience.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Current college student (Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Criminal Justice or related field preferred).

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· Familiarity with major social media platforms.

· Basic graphic design, photography, or video editing skills are a plus.

· Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality.

· Interest in law enforcement or public service is a plus.

Schedule & Duration:

· Flexible hours based on academic schedule (approx. 10–15 hours per week).

· Internship duration: Semester-based or as arranged with academic advisor.
