Interviewing Felicia Tamulevich about her career path gave us a clearer understanding of what it takes to succeed in the accounting field and how classroom learning connects to real-world experience. Felicia is pursuing a master’s degree in accounting and works as an Accountant Assistant at New Power Worldwide, where she has transitioned from an internship to a permanent position. In her role, she supports financial operations, works with data and assists in preparing and analyzing financial documents. She explained that her day-to-day responsibilities can vary, making the job both challenging and engaging, requiring her to stay adaptable and detail-oriented.
Felicia found her opportunity through Handshake, emphasizing the importance of using school resources, such as the O’Brien Center, to strengthen her resume and better prepare for the job market. She explained her coursework, especially Financial Analysis II, helped her build a strong foundation in areas such as cash flow and financial statements, which she now applies in her role. During her internship, she also developed key technical skills, learning new Excel features which have improved her efficiency and productivity. One of her biggest takeaways is that accounting is always evolving and there is a constant learning curve—something she described as “the more you learn, the less you know.”
When asked for advice, Felicia stressed the importance of consistency and mindset. She shared that “showing up 70% of the time is better than 0%,” underscoring how effort and reliability go a long way in professional growth. She also emphasized gratitude, reminding students to appreciate opportunities and the people who support them along the way. Overall, her experience shows that success in accounting comes from a combination of education, hands-on experience and a willingness to keep improving.
