Olivia Calvin ’26 Lands Preceptorship at Beth Israel Hospital

Olivia, a senior nursing student, has been selected to do her preceptorship at Beth Israel Hospital in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

Olivia is a highly engaged member of the Class of 2026, holding leadership roles as a class representative for her nursing class, Admissions Event Coordinator, Relay for Life Lead, and a member of the Honors Student Council. These experiences have strengthened her communication, public speaking and professional skills.

While Olivia was preparing for her nursing preceptorship (a supervised clinical experience focused on hands-on patient care) she regularly met with her advisor, Cristina Fernández, to refine her cover letter. Throughout her college career, she also met with Cristina for résumé development, interview preparation, graduate school applications and scholarship guidance. Olivia refers to Cristina as her number one resource on campus.

Olivia also credits her relationship-building skills to her attendance at the professional development retreat she attended last year. Olivia noted that the PDR helped her bridge connections and start conversations. She said, “Anything can be a connection.”

As Olivia starts her preceptorship, she will work a variety of daytime and nighttime shifts, each twelve hours long. She is very excited to start her preceptorship and says the nursing program has given her the confidence to enter this new chapter. Olivia said, “ I can’t believe it’s finally here, and after everything, it’s so rewarding to be at one of the best hospitals in Boston.”

When asked what her advice would be to underclassmen in the nursing program, she said, “I would say the biggest thing is take it day by day. Rome wasn’t built in one day. It’s going to take time, and it’s going to take struggles, but it makes you stronger.”
