Ashley Bessette ’25 Completes Medical Imaging Internship at Lawrence General Hospital

Ashley, a senior health science student, completed a successful fall internship with Lawrence General Hospital as a medical imaging department student intern.

At her internship, Ashley was responsible for warmly greeting patients, providing them with clear instructions and ensuring they felt comfortable throughout their visit. She also assisted with preparing examination rooms, maintaining a clean and organized environment and completing all necessary room turnover procedures to support efficient patient flow.

Ashley gained a good overview of other departments at Lawrence General, including trauma, nursery, pediatrics and geriatrics. All these modalities expanded her overall knowledge in the hospital setting. Ashley said, “It was eye-opening to see the different fields and see what kind of environments I want to be in and where I should take that next step.”

Throughout Ashley’s internship, she developed strong professional communication skills while interacting with both patients and colleagues.  She also gained experience communicating across language barriers by using active listening, patience and alternative communication methods to support patient understanding. In addition, she built a solid foundation in general hospital operations, including proper PPE protocols and safety procedures.

Ashley credits her Merrimack classes with helping her prepare for her internship. Specifically, her coursework in anatomy stood out as the most beneficial.

Ashley discovered her internship opportunity through one of Merrimack’s internship coordinators, Scott McEnelly, who recommended the Lawrence General internship program to students. After learning about the opportunity, Ashley reached out to the program’s supervisor, and she was able to secure the internship and begin building a strong professional relationship with the team.
