Scoops Up – Zia’s Guide to Work-Life Balance

Written by Zia Sophia

Hi! My mom doesn’t know I’m writing this for you today – English isn’t my first language, you know. But I’m pawsitive I’ve got some wisdom to share.

She keeps talking about this thing called “work-life balance.” Honestly? I don’t think she totally knows what that means. Let me tell you about it from my point of view as a dog who knows how to nap hard and play hard

🌅Stick to a Routine

I’m the best version of myself when my mom keeps us on a schedule. We start the day with a morning walk (I’m likely to bark at another dog, but it’s fine), followed by my well-earned good girl treat. While Mom is at work, I protect the house from delivery trucks and sometimes stare out the window at the other animals in the neighborhood. I spend most of my day sleeping because I sleep better when Mom isn’t here.

When she gets home, we go for more walks, have dinner and play together. I even know it’s bedtime when she turns off the TV, I wake up from my latest dog nap and meet her by the door.

In Human Terms: Prioritize the things that matter to you. Starting your day with a walk, good food and quiet time can help you feel grounded. Sleep matters and counts as productivity!

🦴You Can’t Chase Every Bunny

If I’m honest, I get excited easily. I like to chase the bunnies in our neighborhood and delivery trucks. But when Mom walks in the door after work? BEST. MOMENT. EVER.

She has been teaching me to take a breath and not sprint after everything I see. Turns out, my day isn’t impacted by how many things I chase around.

In Human Terms: Focus is your friend. You’ll have so many opportunities for getting involved, gaining experience and enjoying life. Pick things that align with your goals and values, and know it’s okay to say no sometimes.

🌀 Zoomies and Treats Make Life Better

Everybody needs movement. Whether it’s sprinting laps in the living room (the couch makes a great obstacle course), sniffing every blade of grass outside or doing a dramatic flop on the carpet, I love to stay moving.

When it comes to treats, peanut butter bones are my favorite, but I also like fluffy blankets (preferably the ones I haven’t chewed a hole in) and cuddles after a long walk. It’s the little things that make me feel safe and happy.

In Human Terms: Find whatever kind of Zoomie makes you feel good. I like dancing in the kitchen with the music playing, but you might enjoy a BIG STRETCH of your own or a walk in the middle of your day. Moving your body helps release stress and gives your brain a break.

You should also know what treats help you the most – iced coffee, your favorite TV show or video calling your favorite person. Make sure to build these in regularly, especially during busy or stressful times.

Final Woof

Work-life balance isn’t about doing everything. It’s about making sure the right things get done, while still enjoying the walk, the nap and the occasional belly rub.

Don’t forget that my mom and the team at the O’Brien Center are here for you. I would help if I could – but I’m not allowed in the office…yet.

You’ve got this,

P.S. – Can anyone help convince my mom to make pup cups a required summer treat?
