Wynne Drucker, a communications and media major from Franklin, Massachusetts, is interning for the Orleans Firebirds baseball team this summer. The Firebirds are a collegiate summer team in the Cape Cod Baseball League. The top college baseball players in the country participate in this league, and MLB scouts attend to see who they will draft into the Major Leagues.
Wynne is a digital media intern for the Firebirds. She’ll be running their social media accounts, creating digital content, posting what’s happening during the games and promoting them as a team. She’ll be moving to the Cape this summer and will be working at both home and away games, which she’s extremely excited about,
“It’s a big move but it’s exciting because I have family down there,” she said. “I’m going to be traveling all over to the away games as well, which is super cool.”
This is a dream come true for Wynne as she’s a huge baseball fan and grew up going to summer league games. A key reason why she earned this position is because of her experience in content creation. Wynne’s passion for social media stems back to middle school, when she wanted to learn more about video creation and graphic design.
At Merrimack, she’s a social media manager for three clubs on campus and as a communication major, she believes in-class presenting and public speaking classes helped with her social skills. With this experience at her disposal, she was offered the position by the Firebirds’ President,
“[The Firebirds] said to email their president Bob O’Donnell, and just let them know what experience you’ve had,” she said. “I had to send them a few copies of things that I’ve done for social media management, and they asked me to do an interview. Then, I did a 30-minute Zoom interview with the President of Orleans and that’s how I was offered the job.”
Wynne is very excited to learn more about the sports media industry during this internship, and network with the teams,
“This is really my first time getting into the sports industry…I’m definitely hoping to learn more about sports media specifically and how all those moving parts happen during games,” she said. “It’s [also] definitely a great way to network because there’s…players that could be going into the MLB…and then [I’m] also working with… coaches and managers…[that coached] in the MLB or minor league teams.”
For people looking to get into a digital media position like Wynne, she recommends getting involved in things they’re passionate about and networking with people,
“You don’t have to overachieve…[but] get yourself out there, meet new people… and eventually you’re gonna build up a portfolio…that you can show to [others] and that’s really going to help,” she said. “I’m told by everyone [to network], don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”
With this opportunity, Wynne hopes to eventually get a job with a professional baseball club.
