Celina Mercedes, a sophomore at Merrimack College, is interning with the Department of Homeland Security, where she’s been given a hands-on opportunity to explore her passion for criminology and criminal justice. As an intern with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Celina shadows Special Agents and assists with various projects, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of HSI’s mission and operations. She is particularly involved in role-playing exercises for defensive tactics training, gaining a well-rounded view of how federal agencies work to maintain national security.
Celina’s passion for criminal justice has led her to this internship and her connections at Merrimack helped her secure the position. At Breaking Bread, a dinner and discussion on identity and equity at Merrimack, Celina met Andrea Wamboldt, Director of First Year Experience. Andrea introduced Celina to Professor Peter Darling, Retired Senior Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security. Professor Darling helped secure the internship with Homeland Security and has become a mentor for Celina.
The opportunity to see her passions turn into a career and contribute to real-world investigations has been a dream come true for Celina. “This accomplishment means so much to me because it aligns perfectly with my dream of contributing to public safety at a national level,” she says. “As a young woman from the Dominican Republic, this internship is more than just a professional achievement; it represents the realization of a lifelong passion and a significant step toward my long-term career goals in law enforcement and national security.”
Looking ahead, Celina is confident that her time at HSI will lead to new opportunities in criminology and public safety. She is eager to apply the skills she’s learned and continue pursuing a career that aligns with her passion for law enforcement and national security.
