Erin Katzbek’s Internship Journey in South Windsor, CT

Erin Katzbek, a Merrimack College senior majoring in biology and environmental science, has been actively engaged in the South Windsor, Connecticut community since July 2023, as an intern for the town’s Wildlife Educational Outreach Program.

This opportunity came to her after attending one of the town’s inland and wetland meetings. After the meeting, Erin was introduced to a few board members who were interested in her double major at Merrimack College, and she was later contacted with an offer for an internship position. This role collaborates closely with the senior environmental planner and head of the Inlands and Wetlands Conservation Commission (IWACC). One of Erin’s primary responsibilities has been the trail camera project, aimed at fostering community engagement in biodiversity and wildlife education within South Windsor. Utilizing her research skills, she identified optimal trail camera models and strategically mapped out locations for deployment using geographic information system (GIS) technology. Her role also involved creative decision-making in project execution. Erin created an Instagram page to share photos they obtained, and she worked with the IT department to have a page on the town’s website to showcase their findings.

In addition to the trail camera initiative, Erin has contributed to the Knotweed project, which eradicates invasive weed species behind the town hall, and the Storm Drain Marking project, which aims to map stormwater runoff to various wetlands. Drawing from her coursework, particularly in Conservation and Restoration Biology, Erin has seamlessly applied theoretical knowledge to practical projects over the last ten months.

Erin emphasizes the value of networking and exploring new opportunities, encouraging fellow students to seek internships within local organizations. Her enthusiasm for the trail camera project shows her passion for environmental conservation and her dedication to making an impact in her community.
